The former British territory of Hong Kong is a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on the south coast of China. It is one of only two Hong Kong Special Administrative Regions, with Macau - a rising star as a global gambling destination - being the other.
Hong Kong gained its independence from Great Britain in 1997 after more than 150 years of British rule which say Hong Kong rise to become Asia's economic powerhouse.And its success has continued under China's guidance, although under both the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong ensure the region will maintain the majority of its autonomy until at least 2047.
Hong Kong has been settled for centuries, but it didn't rise to become the pearl of Asia's economy until the 20th century when it boomed on the back of a successful financial services industry.
